Qld emergency nurse heading to Greece to help refugees

Queensland nurse and paramedic Helen Zahos is set to travel to the Greek island of Lesvos on September 30 to help with the influx of refugees from Syria and Afghanistan.

Ms Zahos has 18 years of experience in the medical field and a PhD in Emergency Healthcare.

The concern is clear in Ms Zahos’ interview published in The Age, as she mentions the strain put on locals and refugees alike.

“This is a country that’s already in political and financial turmoil, and they can’t afford to sort their own problems out let alone the influx of these refugees,” she said.

“There’s no infrastructure on the island, no toilets for them to use, no clean water for them to drink...it’s a problem now but once winter hits it’s going to be a massive problem.”
