Parents warning to others: don't leave it too late

When Matilda Kobier, 9, began to show signs of being ill her parents just thought that she had a stomach bug. Unfortunately Matilda’s condition deteriorated and she was rushed to hospital the next morning.

It was soon discovered that Matilda had a very rare virus called HSV encephalitis. This virus eventually resulted in Matilda losing her almost all of her literacy, numeracy and academic skills.

Matilda’s mother, Nicole, Rappell, told the Northern Star that if a parent has any concerns, then they should take their child to the hospital.

"If you think your child's behaviour or movements ... have changed at all when they've been a bit crook, take them to the hospital to get them checked out," she said.

"If you wait — if you think they'll be right by tomorrow — that length of time can be devastating."
