Mother's Day is a day for many of us to appreciate, remember and thank the inspirational women in our lives.
At mycause we are inspired by our partner charities that assist women and their families who have experienced loss or hardship during and after the birth of their child.
This Mother's Day mycause acknowledges the tireless work of these organisations and the women who have shared their stories with us.
A parent's wish after the loss of their baby is to spend as much time as they need to say goodbye.
The charity Emerikus Land Foundation donates Cold Cuddle Cots to maternity hospitals to give families the time they need to say goodbye, such as the Hajny family. The family is thankful for the cuddle cot made available to them at the hospital. So far the charity has distributed 81 Cuddle Cots to maternity hospitals around Australia.
“Our beautiful baby boy Kai Phoenix Hajny arrived and left us on the 17th of March 2016. Over the next few days we were blessed to have precious moments holding and looking at our beautiful son due to the generosity of the Emerikus Land Foundation supplying the hospital we were in with a cuddle cot that kept Kai close to us.” said Megan Baker.
Despite the many joys it may bring, no mother will ever say that parenthood is a walk in the park. Pregnancy and childbirth are the most likely times in a woman's life when she will develop emotional and/or mental health problems.
The Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE) asked why women are not speaking up and are struggling in silence, not seeking help earlier. They discovered that 60% of new mums felt that motherhood was easier for others and half of them didn’t want their friends, family or health professional to know of their emotional struggles.
COPE are working extremely hard to break down stigmas that exists surrounding emotional and mental health challenges for new mums.
Ava Grace Johnson was born into heaven on the 16th March 2015. She was tiny at 15.3 weeks gestation and just 15.5cm long, weighing 105 grams. After her birth, Ava’s parents has a few precious hours with her at the hospital.
A photographer from Heartfelt visited and took photos of the family and Ava before they said goodbye. These photos are some of the family’s most precious possessions, and served to give the family at least a sense of closure during their darkest hours. Read more about the Johnson's journey on their blog, written to break the silence around infant loss.
Heartfelt is a volunteer organisation of professional photographers from all over Australia, dedicated to giving the gift of photographic memories to families that have experienced stillbirths and premature births.
Queensland couple Tom and Natalie, parents of Olive who was lost in January 2016, can’t thank Sarah Mackenzie from Heartfelt Photographers enough, “who volunteered her time to come at short notice and take some beautiful photos of us as a family which we will forever cherish”.
Every day, around 800 women die of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth in developing countries and isolated communities.
Remote living, cultural choices and transport problems mean many babies are delivered at home, with little or no help and often in unhygienic and unsanitary conditions. By providing a clean birthing kit for just $3, mothers have the resources to reduce infection during childbirth.
The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia produces around 140,000 birthing kits per year in Australia, thanks to the generosity of supporters. These supporters give their time to both raise funds and organise assembly day,s where groups of people put together the six components of the birthing kit into press seal bags.
