Rise of Pandemic Giving: Expert says Australians are more generous than ever

Many Australians have suffered hardship these past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but philanthropist expert and founder of leading crowdfunding website, mycause.com.au, Tania Burstin, says it hasn’t prevented everyday Aussies from helping others in need.

While demand for support has been high, many members of the public have done their utmost to give what they could to worthy causes.

According to mycause.com.au, charity crowdfunding has more than doubled since the peak of the pandemic in August 2019. This is a 111% increase with direct charity donations increasing eight times over.

Australians have been abseiling buildings, running the height of Mt Everest, or dedicating their long hair all for charity.

Tania says, “We found that the majority of the charity crowdfunding are going back to Australia’s most vulnerable to the pandemic, people facing unemployment, mental health issues, poverty, and emergency relief.”

Local Sydney man, Jake, will be walking 110km from Bondi Beach to Barrenjoey Lighthouse to fundraise and raise awareness for mental health, especially those most affected by the pandemic. Jake has since raised over $13,000 for mental health charities.

In addition, many Australians are helping one another on a personal level through personal crowdfunding.

Personal crowdfunding causes help to raise funds for individuals who are in desperate need of financial support including individuals who are battling terminal illness, death in the family or a Covid related disaster.

One close knit school community came together for a walkathon fundraiser called Fight4Jon and raised over $200,000 for Jon, a young man diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease at the young age of 21.

The upwards trend of crowdfunding sheds a light on the good-willed Aussie way of lending a hand when times are tough.

“The same support and solidarity that the country has shown to one another during the summer bushfires remains just as strong during this pandemic and is our nation’s hope out of the current crisis,” says Tania.
