The rugged Flinders Ranges are set to roar with the hum of postie bikes once again, as a valiant group of riders embark on a challenging journey to champion a noble cause. This year's 2023 Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride, scheduled from September 7 to 10, was more than just an adrenaline rush; it was a heartfelt race against cancer.

Four South East men - Darren Walters, Terry Fabish, Jim Slattery, and Charlie Matthews - are ready to saddle up on their Honda CT110 Postie Bikes and tackle 1,000 km of the state's most daunting terrains. They, along with approximately 70 other riders, joined forces to raise funds to provide relief for families battling cancer.

The initiative supports the Apex Copper Coast Retreats. In collaboration with the Cancer Council, these retreats grant cancer-affected families a tranquil week-long beachfront escape in Wallaroo, all free of accommodation expenses. Located within the serene surroundings of the Wallaroo Holiday Park, the retreat's luxurious cabins offer respite by the sea, allowing families to create cherished memories away from the shadow of the illness.

For Darren Walters, participation in the Outback Postie Bike Ride has become deeply meaningful. "It started as just a group of blokes from TAFE," Mr. Walters said to The Border Watch. Except for Charlie Matthews, who is in his second year of the ride, most of the group have faced injuries and broken bones in the past events. Yet, their commitment to the cause keeps bringing them back.

The journey through the Flinders Ranges might be arduous, but it's driven by camaraderie, friendship, and the hope of making a real difference. Walters added, "It is a hard ride, a very hard ride, and I’m getting older, not younger."

The community's backing has been overwhelming. Trident Tyre Centre stands out among the many that support their quest. The event was able to raise an astounding $108,000 from multiple donations.

Each day in South Australia, 28 individuals grapple with the harrowing diagnosis of cancer. The significance of continuous support for the affected individuals and their families cannot be overstated.
