MEDIA: Furry Surprise for Survivor

Sharlette is a playful and curious girl who at age four was sadly diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumour in children.

Now aged five, she has undergone two surgeries, six weeks of radiation and four months of chemotherapy between Hobart and Melbourne, Shartlette continues to fight and even excitedly enrolled herself to prep this year.

Due to her condition, the once active Sharlette now struggles every day with fatigue, anxiety, loss of appetite, low self-esteem and limitations in mobility and verbal communication.

As a way to raise Sharlette’s fighting spirit, her family are hoping to surprise her with her wish of having a puppy named Max to be her therapy companion through tough times.

The family are fundraising $1,500 in hopes to make Sharlette’s wish come true - www.mycause.com.au/surpriseforsharlette

Sharlette’s mother, Cassie says, “When we first received the heart-breaking news in May 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I could not believe that this was all happening to my baby girl. After the surgery, I broke down because I could no longer lie to myself about seeing the physical impact of the treatment. It just tore me in half. I then had to stay strong for Sharlette so she did not feel that her condition was upsetting me.”

Cassie says, “I don't want to break Shartlette’s heart by telling her that amongst all the expensive and life-saving treatments, we can't afford to get little Max.”

“I will do anything to give my little girl what she wanted after all she’s been through. All she has wanted was a puppy to keep her safe and cheer her up when she's upset.”

On the 28th February, Sharlette's story was featured on page 4 of the local Tasmanian Examiner newspaper. Read the full feature below:

Since the article was published, the fundraising page went from $700 to over $1,800 in the last 3 days, having exceeded their original goal.
