Georgie Westlund was lucky to get out of her Nelia farm house on time to be rescued when the flood waters started rolling in.
Georgie, with a kangaroo joey in hand, made it on to a neighbour’s canoe from which the rescue helicopter picked them up. She was devastated to leave behind her dog, cow and almost 200 other farm animals.
A few days later, once the water began to recede, Georgie made her way back to her North-West Queensland property where she was glad to find Ziggy the Kelpie alive, along with Milly the cow and a few goats and pigs. Sadly, not all the animals made it.
Georgie’s daughter Bec created a fundraising campaign to help the residents of the small town get back on their feet and start rebuilding their homes and farms. Friends and members of the wider community have made donations to the fundraiser and Bec, Georgie and the residents of Nelia are very grateful.
