MEDIA: Maisie's Big Cycle for Breast Cancer Cure

young fundraiser raises over $20,000

7-year-old Maisie has set herself a cycling challenge to fundraise and support her mum who has cancer.

On the 24th of July, Maisie is riding her bike 20.4km from Karratha to Dampier in Western Australia.

Maisie's mum is battling breast cancer after being diagnosed in April. She is currently undergoing radiotherapy.

Maisie is fundraising for the Breast Cancer Research Centre WA, who are helping to find a cure and new treatment for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

The research centre has a focus on triple-negative breast cancer because it is considered an aggressive cancer.

This type of cancer grows quickly, is more likely to have spread at the time it is found, and is more likely to come back after treatment than other types of breast cancer.

"I want to raise money for Mummies like mine and help scientists find a cure and new medicines for Triple Negative Breast Cancer, " she says on her mycause fundraising page.

Triple-negative accounts for 10 - 15 per cent of breast cancers.

Maisie and her dad spoke about her cause on Triple M Karratha.

To practice before the big ride, Maisie rode to the airport and back "on a little track, not the normal one to Dampier Highway," she shyly told Pablo who hosts Triple M Karratha's breakfast radio.

Maisie's dad said this year had been hard, and they still had a long way to go.

He said "We're looking for the positives and looking to give back."

Maisie says she looks forward to the challenge of riding over that big hill "to help mummies like mine feel better."

Maisie set her fundraising goal at $1,000.

With the help of the community, friends, her parents' colleagues, and some corporate generosity, Maisie reached well over $20,000!
