Kaylah Brown spent an entire day talking with local schools in the Cobram area, raising awareness of melanoma two weeks before setting off on a fundraising trek.
She says before her brother was diagnosed, she knew little about cancer and is trying to change this for the next generation.
When her brother passed away earlier this year, he sadly left behind his 8-year-old.
Kaylah took the opportunity to spruik her participation in the upcoming Canberra to Sydney fundraising trek: Jay’s Mission Melanoma Walk.
She will be joining the instigator of Jay’s Mission, Australian Skin Cancer Foundation founder Jay Allen OAM, for the 10-day, 333 km journey.
“My mother was nervous at first but very supportive at the same time,” Kaylah told The Shepparton News.
The now popular Melanoma Walks from capital city to capital city have been gaining traction over the years and raising an increasing number of dollars.
The last walk fundraised more than $600,000 – over $400,000 more than the first.
‘Canberra to Sydney’ marks the fourth Jay’s Mission Melanoma Walk.
The trip will begin from Canberra’s Parliament House on Friday, November 25 and conclude at Government House in Sydney on Sunday, December 4.
There are six walkers taking on the full 10 days, but participants can instead choose to register for Simmo's Mission Melanoma Walk, going 17 km from Gerringong to Kiama Blowhole; or Ashley’s Mission Melanoma Walk from Kogarah to Alexandria, only 8 km.
The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation aims to provide support and education, fund research, and drive advocacy for Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
