Fundraising for a Disability

Disabilities come in many forms, whether physical, mental, or genetic, from birth or acquired later on, all disabilities impact the lives of those who have them, and to some extent, those around them. For those living with a disability, doing some tasks, being a part of the community, and generally just trying to get around can be difficult. Wheelchairs, treatments, and other expenses add up, and when families cannot afford these, the life of the person with a disability gets that much more isolated. Many families turn to crowdfunding to assist them.

One place wheelchairs, and those confined to them, generally cannot go, is on the beach.

Lee Mackie, in Sydney, noticed that many people in wheelchairs wanted to go to Bondi beach and be a part of the atmosphere there. Sand and wheels do not go together, so Lee started fundraising for Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, so that they can buy a wheelchair mat, which will give many people with disabilities a wonderful experience they would not have otherwise.

Jasmyn Rocca, at 15 months old had an extremely long seizure that left her with severe brain damage. Diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy, Jasmyn was confined to a wheelchair and fed through a tube in her stomach. She looked forward to going to her therapy sessions and attending the Glenroy Specialist school, but when her family’s car got written off in an accident, which thankfully left no one injured, Jasmyn could not be driven anywhere.

A friend of the family started a mycause campaign to raise the money Jasmyn’s parents needed to get a car that was converted appropriately for Jasmyn’s wheelchair when the bank denied the single income family a loan.

Elena Plakas, a young woman with type 3 Spinal Muscular Atrophy, who is confined to a wheelchair, was fortunate enough that her mother was able to purchase a wheelchair friendly van so Elena could go out like she used to, before she became too weak to be without the wheelchair. Unfortunately, the van was not equipped with everything Elena needed to be driven in it safely, and her mother could not afford anymore after purchasing the van.

Elena started a her own personal campaign to raise the money she needed to buy the equipment that the van still needed, so she could go where she wanted.

There are many ways to make the lives of people with disabilities easier, and more comfortable, an important one being to make sure they have the best equipment. Because this costs money that they may not have, starting a campaign through mycause is the best way to raise the money they need.
