In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, students at Diggers Rest Primary School (DRPS) successfully raised over $1,500 in a fundraising initiative for the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), specifically aiding the Fielding family, whose youngest child, Dexter, was born with a rare heart condition.
The fundraiser, held on September 15, was no ordinary school day. Students transformed the campus into a mini-hospital scene, donning costumes of doctors, nurses, surgeons, and Starlight Foundation volunteers.
DRPS has a longstanding tradition of using education and awareness-raising efforts to foster an inclusive environment. Each year, school captains and the junior school council develop a community-focused fundraising initiative. This year's cause hit close to home, supporting a family directly connected to the school community.
“Our team thought it would be a great opportunity to connect, help and support families within our community,” said Ethan, a grade 6 school captain at DRPS.
Bradley Kemp, the assistant principal at DRPS, commended the student leadership team's efforts. “All staff and students dressed up, donated, and acknowledged the fantastic work that the Royal Children’s Hospital provides for so many of our families, especially the Fielding family,” he said.
The initiative, known as Dress 4 RCH Day, offered the students an authentic experience in leadership, according to school officials. Grade 6 school captain Aayla said to Star Weekly, “It definitely helped me develop my leadership skills.”
Brent, a grade 5 student at DRPS, encapsulated the collective sentiment by stating, “The day was really successful. We are proud of the efforts everyone has put in to raise money for RCH.”
Community members who wish to contribute to the cause can still donate until September 30. For more information or to make a donation, visit the Dress 4 RCH Day fundraising page.
