One of the most popular ways for Australians to raise vital funds for their charity of choice is by cutting or shaving their hair. Many people cut or shave for a charity during an event, to raise funds for a loved one or preferred cause.
Shave in an event
Australian charity UnitingCare uses their annual Australia Day event BeardsOff to get men around their cause - suicide prevention. Participants are encouraged to ‘add a picture of [their] luscious beard and a blurb about why you have chosen to support Lifeline’, which is run by UnitingCare in Brisbane. Men interested in participating in the event are able to sign up individually or in groups, giving friends the opportunity to shave for a cause while supporting one another. Events such as Beards Off are a great way to facilitate a discussion about a topic important to you while raising funds to support your favourite charity. Launch your own event or join in today.
Celebrities supporting a cause
Michael Hurley is more than an AFL player - he is also a dedicated ambassador for Australian charity MAD Foundation. When the time came for Michael to chop off his impressive beard, Michael used the opportunity as a way to shave to raise money for MAD Foundation. Michael, mycause and the MAD Foundation all promoted the upcoming shave on their social media accounts, with the shave itself being broadcast on facebook live. Many donors were Essendon supporters and people who knew of Foundation, all of whom were eager to support Michael and his efforts to raise some much needed funds for the charity. Over $35,700 was raised, with 401 donations and over 2900 shares of Michael’s fundraising campaign online.
Shave to Support a Charity
When Essendon football player Michael Hurley decided to shave his beard for MAD Foundation, Michael inspired his devoted young fan Noa, who then wanted to show his support for the charity. While Noa couldn’t grow a beard just yet, the decision was quickly made to shave Noa’s beloved locks off to also raise money for MAD Foundation. On New Year’s Eve, Noa shaved his head and days later, posted an update to his mycause campaign, thanking donors for their generosity with a photograph of his shaved head. Thanks to the dedication of Noa and the support of his family and friends, Noa was able to raise over $1300 for the charity.

Ease the Dread
Wollongong psychologist Maris decided to shave for a cause that he worked with each day - domestic violence. After working with a young woman who was trying to leave an abusive relationship, Maris was inspired to try and raise as much funds for the SAHSSI (a women’s crisis service in Illawarra) as possible. To achieve this task, Maris opted to sacrifice his beloved dreadlocks that he had been growing for 20 years and shave them off to raise the funds. Maris turned his epic shave into an event, with the local paper arriving to photograph his dreadlocks being shaved off as friends, family and members of the community banded together to add their support for Maris’s campaign. With over 941 shares online and 162 donations, Maris was able to raise over $9600 for his cause.
