Ben Franklin, Minister for the Arts and Regional Youth, has shown his support for the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
The Minister tweeted excitedly on Thursday about attending The Big Busk, Sydney Youth Orchestra’s annual fundraising event.
For the event, Sydney’s many youth orchestras come together to perform for the public and raise much-needed funds.
Despite having to cancel outdoor performances due to the weather, the day was a success and raised a total of over $45,000 for the organisation.
Franklin tweeted:
“I was thrilled to take part in the Sydney Youth Orchestra’s biggest annual fundraising event, the Big Busk today.”
“These musicians are extraordinary and are the future of the cultural life of our nation.”
18 youth orchestras performed throughout the day on 29 September at Grosvenor Place and the General’s Building. The RGB performance was also live-streamed.
Sydney Youth Orchestra provides orchestral training and opportunities for young musicians across NSW.
They are reliant on fundraising donations because they receive less than 7 per cent in Government funding. This year, SYO were fundraising to:
Purchase “endangered” instruments
Purchase sheet music for our music library
Support business infrastructure
Find a new home
The Big Busk is Australia’s only public celebration of youth and orchestral music.
