About the Event

The Zimele 24 Hour Challenge will see teams of students and friends of St Kevin’s College aim to complete as many laps of the St Kevin’s College ovals as possible in a 24 hour period in support of Zimele projects in Kenya.

About Zimele

Zimele works in partnership with the Edmund Rice Foundation Australia (ERFA) to build relationships and walks in solidarity with our underprivileged brothers and sisters in Africa and Australia.

Zimele strives to enhance the dignity of individuals and communities through the empowerment of education and assist in the provision of basic health needs to our project communities.

About the Projects

The Br Beausang Primary and Secondary School in Embul-Bul, Nairobi, Kenya.

Zimele continues to fund the following micro-projects at the school:

• The 'Breakfast Club' provides a porridge drink for all primary children each morning. Many students come to school without having eaten; the provision of breakfast has improved energy levels and attention span in the classroom.

• Child sponsorships are made available to allow those who cannot afford the miniminal school fees to continue their education.

• The 'Make a Girl Smile' program provide sanitary towels for girls, improving not only the quality of life for the girls but addressing what previously was a high rate of school absenteeism and enhancing educational outcomes.

• Tertiary scholarships are made available to graduates to enable them to take up offers of university places that they would otherwise not be able to accept.

• Micro-finance loans are made available to parents to assist them in self-funding their children's education

Education for Life, Eldoret

The Education for Life Centre, Eldoret Kenya, aims at promoting attitude change in order to reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS and other addictive behaviours among the 300 adult clients of the centre. The centre also helps other vulnerable groups such as youth, orphans, street children and prisoners. Zimele funds empower clients with skills for economic independence such as tailoring and bead making, helps provide ongoing psychosocial support, and provides medication and nutrition for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Zimele also funds scholarships for students whose parents cannot afford the school fees. The outcome will be improved livelihoods and positive living.
