Volunteer Dedicates Five Years to Volunteering at Community Kitchen

In the heart of Taree, an unsung hero named Vicki King has been lighting up lives through her selfless dedication to CatholicCare's Taree Community Kitchen. For half a decade, Vicki has been a steadfast volunteer, embodying the spirit of service and making a profound impact on the community.

Vicki's journey as a volunteer began in the wake of a personal loss, when her full-time work had to take a backseat to care for her ailing mother. After her mother's passing in 2019, Vicki was on the lookout for a meaningful way to give back, and that's when she discovered Taree Community Kitchen.

From peeling potatoes to mopping floors, from dishing up food to serving friends with a warm smile, Vicki's days at the kitchen are filled with a multitude of tasks that she takes on with unwavering enthusiasm. Reflecting on the experience, she shared, "I love helping the people coming in like the young mums and the pensioners and the homeless. They come in and they are so grateful for what we give them. When they leave, and they’ve got a smile on their face, it’s all worth it."

Two years ago, the Taree area faced a devastating flood that swept away many of Vicki's personal belongings, leaving her with more time to channel her energies into the Community Kitchen. "I spend more time at the Kitchen where I can talk to people and help them as much as I can," she explained MNnews Today. Her resilience and determination to make a positive impact in the face of personal challenges are truly inspiring.

Vicki also took a moment to acknowledge the challenges that come with volunteering. "From the minute you walk through that door to the minute you walk out, it is hard work, but it is rewarding," she shared candidly. She emphasised the value of support from the community, whether it's through volunteering, raising awareness, or donating food and resources.
