In 2008, the Australian government made a formal commitment to address Indigenous disadvantage in Australia, known as 'Closing the Gap', but what's "the gap”?
The gap refers to the vast health and life-expectation inequality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This inequality includes:
- shorter life expectancy
- higher rates of infant mortality
- poorer health
- and lower levels of education and employment
Fast forward 14 years later and the inequality of Indigenous communities still exists with more charity causes, movements and protests occurring every year.
Communities continue to turn to crowdfunding as a way to support their efforts to take a stand for Indigenous Rights.
Protecting Indigenous forests from harmful development
The local community are taking a stand against the Santos coal seam gas project in NSW’s Pilliga Forest, long recognised as one of the most important areas for biodiversity in eastern Australia, home to at least 300 native animal species and over 900 plant species.
A crowdfunding initiative was created to support the Moree Ecological Holistic Information Centre, whose aim is to defend and maintain our lands of the Gomeroi First Nation people.
So far, over $15,000 has been raised and continues to climb with the community’s support.
Justice for Treaty
Ahead of the 2018 Treaty Talks Workshop in Sydney, Aboriginal communities across Australia are seeking financial support towards the Treaty for Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander rights.
Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander Peoples from across this country are calling for a Treaty with the Australian Government as a means to implement self -determination and to address the stark disparity in economic social conditions of Aboriginal communities and structural racism.
A fundraising page called Justice Through Treaty was created with over 434 donations to the National Congress of Australia's First People.
Take a stand for Indigenous Rights today by fundraising for a movement or charity!
