WHEN Ange McCaughley watched her tired little girl sleep for hours in hospital after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, she made a life-changing promise.
Brave Lila was an hour off falling into a coma while on holidays at the Gold Coast last year when doctors finally found the cause of her sore stomach.
And as the Belmont family came to terms with the “relentless” chronic illness, Ange felt compelled to make a change.
She is now preparing to run the Great Ocean Road Marathon next month in her daughter’s honour.
“Lila was very, very ill and we had no idea of the seriousness of it all,” Ange remembers.
“I cried many tears as I watched her sleep countless hours in hospital and I promised her that I would make a difference.
“I promised I would raise awareness of this illness so that no other parent would have to endure such an experience. So that others know the symptoms.”
