MEDIA: Fundraising Event I Run For Her

Charity fundraising event for domestic violence

I Run For Her is a fundraising event and awareness campaign created by charity Got Your Back Sista.

The organisation works to spread the message that domestic violence is never ok.

This Sunday 16 October, Got Your Back Sista are inviting everyone to register for the event on mycause

Individuals or teams can walk or run wherever they want, wearing a ‘Say NO to domestic violence’ shirt if possible.

The event has so far raised over $60,000 but their target is $100,000.

Got Your Back Sista is dedicated to raising awareness and supporting women and children affected by domestic and family violence.

The charity runs programs, fundraising events, special projects, and campaigns.

Head of Got Your Back Sista, Mel Hilston, told Newcastle Live they were expecting around 700 people to join them in the local area on Sunday for I Run For Her.

“The response has just been really wonderful.”

She said the best part of it was the impact and sense of solidarity that an event brings.

“The heartening thing is that we can be a lone person standing on a soapbox telling everybody it’s not ok, but to really see change and to educate people it’s about getting people in the community to come together to say it's not ok.”

Got Your Back Sista was established in 2016 and has continued to grow its services and campaigns.

In early 2020, Got Your Back Sista opened its own second-hand shop in Islington.

Recently, they started a new program providing one-on-one personalised support, including connecting women with legal assistance.

Mel Hilston explained the charity is also now seeing very positive results from their consistent campaigning.

“The more that we do educational campaigns – …we do one every year – we’re seeing that the Government has been more active and other organisations are more active around educating the community.”

“The fact that…we’re engaging the community to educate them on what constitutes abuse, that then encourages people who are experiencing it to take steps to get help and to get out of that situation.”
