Donating for the Holidays

Tania Burstin, founder and managing director of mycause.com.au sat down to talk to Adam and Seb from 88.3 Southern FM’s Wednesday breakfast show about crowdfunding and Christmas on the 5th of December.

After first explaining that crowdfunding is really just the more updated term for online fundraising, Tania recalled the beginning of mycause around ten years ago. Online fundraising had not existed in Australia at all when Tania introduced it, and since creating mycause, crowdfunding has taken off in a big way, with some campaigns raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in under a week.

Tania made the point that the reason crowdfunding is so successful is because “at the end of the day, everybody wants to help their friends.” We all know how difficult it can be to either ask for donations or say no to giving some money, so giving through a mycause crowdfunding campaign makes everything easier, “people can donate if they want, and if they don’t it’s not awkward.”

Because the fundraising campaign is online, it is simple to share the link on social media or by email to people who are likely to donate, then “you encourage them, you post updates” and let your supporters know that you are thankful.

Before she left, Tania gave Adam and Seb some ethical gifting ideas for Christmas, highlighting the charity gift voucher which allows you to make a tax-deductible donation and let the receiver of the gift decide which charity they would like to give the money to.

Another Kris Kringle option, more suitable for businesses according to Tania, is the charity gift card. This is a way business can donate a large amount of money to a charity they are aligned with in honour of many employees or clients who can all be sent personalised cards.

Finally, Tania reiterated that “Christmas is a really big time for charities to ask for money” and instead of being overwhelmed trying to donate to so many at different times, it is so easy to use mycause portfolio giving to give to all your favourite charities in one transaction.
