Caulfield MP, David Southwick, has pledged to spin some tunes at Zionism Victoria’s celebration next month, but on one condition. He asks that the community raise at least $10,000 to support Ukrainian and Russian refugees fleeing to Israel.
“If we’re going to take a trip down memory lane, allowing DJ Dave to relive his glory years and the rest of us to relive our simchas, we need everyone to chip in,” he told The Australian Jewish News.
The Liberal Party deputy leader was once the DJ for bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah circuits throughout the 80s and 90s. Beginning DJ-ing in year 12, he quickly set up his own DJ business and was highly sought after for “getting kids dancing by teaching them moves to the songs.''
Southwick now wants to use his entertainment talents to support the critical work being done by the United Israel Appeal assisting Ukrainian and Russian refugees. He decided to dedicate a night of DJ-ing during the Zionism Victoria Yom Ha’atzmaut party as a fundraising appeal he’s hoping will get lots of attention.
“I kind of thought if there’s ever a time to do it, probably now’s the time,” he said.
Southwick and Zionism Victoria are appealing to the community to donate via their mycause fundraising page and raise at least $10,000. After just 30 days, the fundraiser has collected almost $4,000.
Southwick stated this week, "It is terrific to see so many people donating already, but DJ Dave is only making an appearance if we get to the $10K, so let's get this party started – donate now."
The event will take place at The Palais in St Kilda on Wednesday 26 April so there’s more time to donate. This year’s party marks the 75th anniversary of Israel’s War of Independence and the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. UIA Victoria CEO, Jeff Feldman, said to AJN: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Zionism Victoria to bring back this icon of the community to perform on such a special occasion…while raising funds for such a critical cause…” Southwick said he is currently spending time poring over setlists, “getting match-fit” for his comeback.
“With everything that we’ve gone through over the last couple of years, we really, really need a party, and what better time to celebrate than Israel’s 75th birthday?”
