In a show of community spirit and support for athletes with intellectual disabilities, emergency services personnel and Albany community members are set to take part in a chilling Polar Plunge event at Middleton Beach. The plunge, scheduled for this Sunday, aims to raise crucial funds for Special Olympics WA.
Approximately 30 brave souls, including police, paramedics, and firefighters, will jump from the Middleton Beach jetty into icy waters, either as teams or individuals. The event's fundraising has already surpassed $1700, and more is anticipated as the day draws near.
Constable Lizzy Alderson of the Albany police force expressed her enthusiasm to begin a local Polar Plunge, a fundraising tradition usually held at Hillary's Boat Harbour.
“The Polar Plunge has been held for a number of years at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, and I loved the idea of starting the event in Albany,” Const. Alderson said. "We would love for the community to come and watch our first responders jump into the chilly water and fundraise for a great cause."
With strong ties between the WA police and Special Olympics WA, 20 police officers, along with paramedics, firefighters, Special Olympics volunteers, and members of the public, have committed to taking the plunge. The efforts are part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics, a global movement to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics.
The funds will be directed to Special Olympics WA, aiding in the provision of more sporting programs, events, equipment, coaches, and medals for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
The event promises to be a lively affair, with participants set to jump in their work uniforms or costumes, including Great Southern Police Superintendent Paul Coombes. The community is invited to partake or come and cheer for the plungers. Registration for participation is just $10 and can be done at The Polar Plunge Event Page.
The day's program will start at 10 am and will open with a welcome ceremony involving Special Olympics WA athletes. Following the plunge, a pancake breakfast will provide a warm reprieve for participants and spectators alike.
The Albany community's dedication to supporting Special Olympics WA through this Polar Plunge illustrates the heartfelt commitment to inclusivity and care for those with intellectual disabilities. The event not only raises funds but also fosters awareness and unity.
