I'm in my final year at school, and to complete the year we have to undertake a year long project of our own choosing. I've decided that I wanted to raise awareness for mental health in youth. Alongside hosting a campaign on Facebook and twitter called 'Nurture your Mind', I've decided to play to my strengths and hold an art exhibition. The exhibition is going to feature famous people who have suffered from mental illnesses, such as Winona Ryder, Lady Di, Kurt Kobain, Amy Winehouse, Tim Burton etc. They will each have a portrait in graphite - displaying that image of them that we can see - and then another in a medium relative to their illness - showing us who they really are. For example, Amy Winehouse suffered form depression and eating disorders. I will be collaborating dark inks (for depression) and collage (for eating/body image disorders). I'm hoping that through seeing people who inspire, motivate or intrigue us suffer just as readily as we do. That mental illness is not uncommon, and shouldn't be treated without such degrading scepticism. Having a mental illness can be scary; you can never run away from your own mind.
As a young artist, I'm keen to make a difference using my artistic works. My goal is hold an art exhibition to raise awareness for mental health in youth. As well as being educational and a good support for local art, it will be a healthy, and necessary step towards eradicating stigma.
