Walking Bendigo to Ballarat in a tutu (The Goldfields Track)
Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimers when he was 62, 8 years ago. This July dad will turn 70 – he won’t know it or remember it. He is in a nursing home in Ballarat, fully supported, unable to communicate, or do anything for himself. During the walk I will be wearing a tutu – for no particular reason, although I have hiked in a tutu previously. I think this time the link to wearing a tutu is a reminder about having fun, being playful and enjoying. I am an advocate of bush adventure (including bush adventure therapy) and have worked with disengaged young people using the bush and outdoor adventure as a means to re-engagement and change process. I believe being in the bush/outdoors has many benefits, included mental health benefits – hence the outdoors aspect of the event.

In 2003, Alzheimer's Australia established the Hazel Hawke Alzheimer’s Research and Care Fund to support dementia care research. Managed by the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, donations will fund emerging researchers looking at ways to improve dementia care across Australia.
