From the 5th-14th August, there will be 20 of us from GJ Gardner Homes NSW walking the Kokoda Track. We are using this opportunity to raise money for two charities that are close to our hearts - Mates In Construction NSW and Legacy. Mates NSW is a charity established in 2013 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian building and construction workers. They provide suicide prevention through community development programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. The MATES program is based on the simple idea that suicide is everyone’s business. If the building and construction industry in Australia is to improve the mental health and well-being of workers and reduce suicide, then it cannot be left to mental health professionals: everyone in the industry must play their part. Legacy was founded on the promise made by one digger to his mate, to look after his family. This became known as ‘The Promise’. 100 years on, Legacy provides the same stability, guidance and assistance that a partner would normally provide to his or her family. Australia-wide, Legacy supports 40,000 partners and children of veterans who have given their lives or health whilst serving our country.
