TASMANIA BELONGS TO AUSTRALIA - BUT
FINFISH FARMING IS KILLING TASMANIA!
The funds we are seeking will be used to design and implement a strategy to inform Australians citizens and the Federal government how finfish farming negatively impacts directly on Tasmania and, indirectly, on Australia.
We need to spread the word about how destructive finfish farming is to Tasmania. Finfish farming in Tasmania currently includes Atlantic Salmon and Ocean Trout.
To compound the problem, the multi-national finfish companies are planning to introduce additional species, again not native to Tasmanian waters.
It is imperative that we harness the power of the Australian people and the Australian Labor government to stop the Tasmanian government from expanding the salmon farm industry and allowing the introduction of other farmed fish species into Tasmanian waters.
Unfortunately, the level of awareness on the mainland is currently very low. This is largely because the opponents of finfish farming do not have sufficient resources to mount a professional communication strategy to engage the rest of Australia and the federal Labor government.
It is important to note that a very recent survey done for the Australia Institute demonstrated that 72% of Tasmanians are highly critical of the salmon industry. That is three quarters of Tasmania's population!
It is highly concerning too that the Federal Labor government, in particular Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek, has not put up its hand to stop the abuse of Tasmania's marine environment.
We feel we have been left off the map yet again!
We need to massively increase awareness about the damage to Tasmania's marine environment and our clean green image with the resultant damage it causes to our tourism industry.
WE NEED AUSTRALIA TO DEMAND FINFISH FARMING BE REMOVED FROM TASMANIA'S OCEANS AND MOVED ONTO LAND WHERE EFFLUENT CAN BE MANAGED.
IF THE FINFISH COMPANIES REFUSE THEY MUST LEAVE TASMANIA!
