Support Research of Old Masters Painting "Desposition from the Cross"

W01408

Deposition from the Cross

possibly Venetian School

ca. 17th century. Oil on copper

A beautiful painting on copper with rich colour and modelling, although with some paint loss, showing perhaps the influence of Veronese. Christ’s body is being lowered to his grieving disciples and the Virgin Mary by two men on ladders that form a powerful triangular motif. This significant painting is a highlight work and we hope research can determine the artist or school.

Understanding the history and provenance of our artefacts and in this case our artworks is an important and ongoing part of the Abbey Museum collection management. However, this is only possible with the support of many people.

The Abbey is seeking donations to support the extensive research of our Old Master painting collection.

To undertake the in-depth research required for each painting will cost $2250.

Please consider choosing a painting for which you will fund the research. You may wish to do this in one lump sum or as a weekly or monthly payment. There are 31 paintings in all to choose from.

Your generosity will be noted in the catalogue that will accompany the opening of the art gallery and on our website. You will also receive a complimentary copy of the catalogue.
