This spring, I’ll be chopping off my mop of hair to raise funds and awareness for the Gilbert’s Potoroo (or Ngilgyte), Potorous gilbertii - Australia’s most endangered mammal. This amazing creature is about the size of a small rabbit, similar looking to our better-known quenda/bandicoot, but it has fluffier cheeks and the cutest bulgy eyes. Those who know it well, say this little guy is particularly gentle natured, with super soft, silky fur - aww! It lives right here in Western Australia and is the rarest marsupial in the world! Currently, ~100 individuals remain in four small pockets on the South Coast of WA: Two Peoples Bay, Waychinicup, Bald Island and most recently, Middle Island off Esperance. The Gilbert's Potoroo Action Group (GPAG) are the only not-for-profit organisation solely dedicated to conserving the Gilbert's Potoroo and they need all the help they can get! They help Gilbert’s Potoroo through fundraising for critical conservation actions and equipment (cameras, fencing repairs and transmitters), awareness raising through social media, events and their quarterly newsletter (https://www.potoroo.org/newsletters) and volunteering. I am calling on family, friends and all those who value this unique species, to help support my campaign - every dollar counts! The Big Chop will be happening at the end of September, where my hair will also be 'recycled' to make a wig for someone in need. Let the count-down begin! Photo credit: Dick Walker and GPAG More info on Gilbert's Potoroo: After been thought extinct for over 100 years, the Gilbert's Potoroo was miraculously rediscovered in small numbers in 1994. Gilbert's Potoroos are excellent ecological engineers, assisting with the dispersal of fungal spores that are essential symbionts of many plants. Therefore, protecting this species helps with the protection of a range of other threatened flora and fauna. There are 5 main threats to Gilbert’s Potoroo: 1. Fire: the biggest risk to the population, as seen in 2015, when 90% of Potoroo habitat at Two Peoples Bay was destroyed in a bushfire; 2. Predation (by foxes and cats predominantly but also some risk from native pythons); 3. Inadequate gene flow (genetic management between the populations is critical to ensure the sub-populations do not become inbred); 4. Climate change (warming and drying climate could lead to more frequent and intense bushfires and also possibly reduced supply of the truffle like fungi that make up 94% of the Potoroo’s diet); and 5. Lack of knowledge (which may limit the development and implementation of the best management strategies, such as the impact of climate change on truffle-like fungi, details of habitat use including post-fire recolonisation, causes of Potoroo mortality, etc). Hi everyone, As my fundraising page Chopping my locks for the Gilbert's Potoroo is coming to a close on Saturday, I wanted to take this final opportunity to say one last BIG thank you for your support and donations. Dr Jackie Courtenay, representing the Gilbert's Potoroo Action Group, wants me to pass this message onto you: Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group are incredibly grateful to Shelley for her initiative and courage in “Chopping her Locks" to raise money to help Gilbert’s Potoroo. As a small volunteer community group it is always wonderful when a supporter just decides to launch a fundraiser to help the Potoroos and especially so when they end up doubling their fundraising goal!! The money will be used to help purchase some GPS transmitters to support intensive monitoring of Gilbert’s Potoroos at Two Peoples Bay following a planned reintroduction of animals to the area by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Their habitat was catastrophically burnt in a bushfire in 2015 and the planned translocation aims to bring them back to recolonise their former home. Thank you so much to Shelley, Lisa at Creative Hairwork in Geraldton, and everyone who has donated so generously to this fundraiser. We would like to finish by quoting one of the donors to this campaign, Vinith Menezes, who listed his reason for donating as “Because what is the actual point of a world without Potoroos” , which sums up exactly why we all keep doing what we do to help save this precious marsupial. Thanks again everyone for your support. You will be pleased to know, one-month in from shaving my head, I'm quite enjoying the short hair change. My dense crop of hair is slowly getting longer with no signs yet of getting flatter - afro on the cards maybe..? Sending a big potoroo-hug, Shelley

It was (and still is!) a very weird sensation having a shorn head after all these years. And I’ve learnt a lot of things about my head/hair – for a start, it’s even more dense and coarse than I thought! It was noted that my heart rate reached 134 bpm at one point, but overall, it was a very exciting and fun experience! A huge thanks to everyone who has supported me by spreading the word or donating. The campaign is still open for another month, so please help to get the word out there about Gilbert’s Potoroo.

Yesterday I had the BIG CHOP for the Gilbert’s Potoroo with my friends and family cheering on! Five long ponytails were prepared for donation to make a wig for someone in need (these will be sent to Sustainable Salons in Sydney) – and then it was shaved to a number 6 (about 2cm). A big thanks to Lisa at Creative Hairwork, Geraldton for donating her time and skills to the cause!

Thank you so much for your donations toward the Gilbert’s Potoroo - you have all been so generous and supportive! We have now passed the original target of $2000 but please keep telling your friends, family and colleagues as every dollar donated will help towards securing this marsupial’s future. There is one week to go so I encourage you to raise awareness about GIlbert’s Potoroo by weaselling it into your conversations over the next few days.. Also consider becoming a member of the Gilbert’s Potoroo Action Group, to receive updates on their conservation efforts and you can even volunteer with them on the south coast! This is a ‘before’ shot of my hair, which is very ready for a cut - 65cm in places and will make a great wig! A big thanks the Lisa and her team at Creative Hairwork in Mt Tarcoola, Geraldton - my favourite and only hairdresser for the last decade ;) These guys will be doing the honours this Friday!
