I have been part of the frontline Vet Volunteering team during the Northern Rivers Region Floods in NSW and need your help to continue our work in taking care of the flood affected animals.
In this region alone, an estimated 2800 families have lost their homes and farms to the floods and are no longer in a position to take care of the medical needs of their pets.
These funds will be used to purchase medical supplies to treat the dogs, cats, birds, horses and livestock of these families for the coming weeks and months whilst they rebuild their lives.
Funds will be allocated to these three areas:
1. Medical supplies for injured horses & farm animals There are currently six horses being treated in a make-shift field hospital, currently located at the Bangalow Showgrounds. These horses had to swim for up to 12 hours through the flood waters and then spent a further 2 to 7 days stranded in the floodwater and mud until rescues were made possible. All have multiple open, infected wounds and are at risk of sepsis, pneumonia and colic if not managed properly. They require twice daily Vet checks, bandage changes, pain relief and antibiotics for weeks to come until their wounds have healed. Our team of Vets and nurses are volunteering their time however we need to fund the medications, bandaging supplies and hay. This clinic will admit and treat other horses and farm animals in need.
2. Peaceful At-Home Euthanasia For the thousands of homeless people of the Northern Rivers region, I am also providing a free, at-home euthanasia service when it comes time for their beloved pets to pass on. This will be provided in their temporary home, or location of choice. This is for "End of Life" situations only, when it becomes the most humane option for the elderly pet. Funds will be spent on the medical supplies used to provide this service.
3. Medical Care for Small Animals Funds will also purchase necessary medical supplies for the dogs, cats and birds of affected families.
Thank you so much for helping us to help the thousands of animals in need during these unprecedented times.
