It has been heartbreaking watching the country where I was born and where my ancestors have lived for generations, being ravaged by war. Over the last 5 days, my hometown of Izyum, located 123 km from Kharkiv, in Eastern Ukraine has been shelled and bombed, killing at least 6 adults and 2 children: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7doA0n41KBo.
My uncle, born in Ukraine but living in Moscow, is currently in Izyum with his Ukrainian mother, without electricity, water or heating because the town's gas and electricity plants have been bombed. It is currently – 2 degrees Celsius at night. My dad’s aunt is currently sleeping in an apartment whose windows have been smashed by the sheer blast of explosions. She has had to cover the windows with cardboard and sleeps in the corridor, to avoid being hit by shelling. Kharkiv, the city where my parents went to university, and where they have countless friends and godchildren, has been under extremely heavy shelling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlI_yN8wZ_U. Countless civilians have spent nearly a week underground - in metros and bunkers - shielding themselves from gunfire.
This is the lived experience of some of my closest family members. Millions of Ukrainians have similar stories.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Living in Australia there are limited ways to help, but one thing I can do is to raise money to provide for humanitarian assistance. One of the best recipients of this money, as far as I can see, is the Red Cross, which is appealing for donations to provide life-saving humanitarian aid to those affected by this horrible war: https://www.redcross.org.au/ukraine/ . I have set up this page so that your donation goes straight to the Red Cross' Ukraine Appeal.
For those that don't know, the Red Cross is an independent, neutral organisation ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war. The International Committee of the Red Cross is the peak global organisation for the provision of humanitarian aid and promoting humanitarian law.
Please donate what you can to help the people of Ukraine in this dark time.
Donate today to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal and you can help provide emergency relief and longer-term humanitarian support to people and communities affected by this unfolding crisis. Your donation can help provide the life-saving support needed right now and, in the weeks and months to come.
