DANII Foundation

In honour of the DANII Foundation, I'd like to raise money for people affected by Type 1 Diabetes and their families.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9 years old. I remember being terrified knowing my life was going to really change. Spending a few days in intensive therapy, I learnt how to inject myself with insulin, prick my finger for a blood glucose reading and count carbohydrates (among many other things). This was terrifying for me, to adopt a new way of life, with no choice at such a young age.

Having type 1 diabetes means you have to self-regulate your blood sugar levels i.e replicate what your vital organ - pancreas - does. Unfortunately, this means that error is inevitable which can cause you to go into a diabetic coma (even in your sleep). About 1 in 20 people with type 1 diabetes will die from low blood sugar (hypo) what has been termed ‘dead in bed syndrome’ (“DIBS”). Advances in recent years mean that remote alert technology (continuous monitoring of glucose levels within the body, with the ability to send notifications when sugars are too low or too high) is now available to reduce the risk of DIBS but it is expensive.

The mission of the DANII Foundation is to lobby the Government and industry to ensure the latest technologies are available and affordable, alerting the type ONE and their carers to life-threatening hypo and hyperglycaemia. I'm inspired by the work of DANII Foundation and wanted to support them by raising money.
