Why am I doing this?

Because I've heard about people I have gone to school with speak about how their family members have committed suicide and I have gone to school with kids who speak like they are very sad and perhaps don't have an outlet to speak about bullying or have become the bullies.

Below, is one of the speeches I have written for another event but is because of Dolly.

What happens when you ask and someone says they are not ok?

You may not have the answer to support a child who says they’re not feeling ok but as a mum or dad you could:

• Remember that it might seem small to you but we’re kids and it’s big to us
• Support us by listening and communicating – put your phone/laptop down
• Ask someone for help – the school, a local Health Centre or a Doctor.

At the different schools I’ve been too I have seen other kids who are bullied, sit alone and look lonely. I’ve been that kid too. I do challenge people when i see them being mean and dad says that is brave. I just think it’s the right thing to do. Even in the last two weeks I’ve asked another student if they wanted to sit with us because normally, he isn’t so quiet so i wanted to make sure he was ok.

We also have a buddy bench at school and FMG contributed to this bench so thank you for thinking about kids and their feelings. I’ve sat on that bench as my brother has and heaps of kids have.

Ask your kids when you pick them up or get home these three questions:
1. Are you ok?
2. HOW HAVE YOU FELT TODAY?
3. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU’VE TREATED OTHER PEOPLE TODAY?
SO, WHAT MAKES ME FEEL OK WHEN THERE’S MORE THEN JUST SAYING, “I DON’T FEEL OK”.
1. SPENDING TIME WITH DAD AT THE PARK KICKING A FOOTY
IF YOU’VE HAD A BAD, LONG OR BUSY DAY AT WORK THEN IT IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY TO MAKE TIME TO:
• GO TO THE PARK AND THROW A VORTEX
• GO FOR A FAMILY RIDE OR WALK
• COOK DINNER TOGETHER
• PUT MUSIC ON AND DANCE AND/OR SING
• JUMP ON A TRAMPOLINE

And, the most important things you can do is: hug, kiss and listen to your kids and remember; THERE’S MORE TO SAY AND DO AFTER YOU ASK, “ R U OK”.
