My Dad passed away nearly 4 weeks ago after a 3 year valiant fight with cancer. On Good Friday I’m going to climb the equivalent vertical meters of Mt Everest (8848m) on the virtual cycling platform, Zwift. In doing so I’m hoping to raise a few dollars to help with the research into GI cancer in honour of my Dad.
Dad’s passing was sudden and unexpected, despite his cancer diagnosis. Throughout his battle, he had the advice of his Medical Oncologist - Dr Simone Steel. He always spoke very highly of her, often in a humorous way, but always with the utmost respect and trust. Simone is currently preparing and training to climb the 7126m mountain, Himlung Himal in Nepal to raise awareness and funds that will improve outcomes for her patients. Simone is conducting a fundraiser for the GI Cancer Institute and I hope to use any funds raised here to contribute to Dad’s doctors fundraiser. All funds raised here will be directly donated to Simone's fundraiser
Late last year Dad did his own personal fundraiser and contributed to Simone’s cause. One of Dad’s strengths and passions was share market trading. He used a few hundred dollars and turned it into $2000!!!! He donated this entire amount to her fundraiser last year.
So, come Friday the 10th April, I will be on my stationary bike for 12+ hours and 200+ kilometres riding up and down ‘Alpe du Zwift’, a replica of the iconic Alpe d’Huez climb in the French Alpes, 8.5 times to complete my virtual Everesting (a.k.a. Everesting). The concept of ‘Everesting’ is fiendishly simple: pick your climb and then ride repeats of this climb in a single activity until you ascend 8,848m – the equivalent height of Mt Everest.
Any donation or moral support is greatly appreciated.
