I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones, after a short battle with kidney cancer, I have now been cancer free for the past two and half years.I have seen and known family and friends from each side of the world (Australia and UK) battle with this terrible disease, some have won, and some have sadly lost.
I have always been a fairly active person, and if it wasn't for getting an injury while playing a football match (soccer for you Aussies!) I would never have been to the doctors to get a scan. While scanning to see if I had any broken ribs they found a cancerous tumor. I was lucky, they found it early enough to be treated.
A few months of recovery after surgery, I was able to start enjoying playing football, and get back to being active once again. It is very true what they say, you begin to look at things a little differently. Life is to be lived so live it!
It has always been a dream of mine to trek to Everest Base Camp (well the actual dream is to climb to the summit of Mt Everest ... baby steps first!!)
I will be taking this challenge in March .. a 130km trek reaching a altitude of just under 5,500m (17,600ft). This challenge is nothing compared to the battle some people and their families have while trying to fight cancer.
I will be training hard over the next six months, to help with the fatigue and mountain/altitude sickness, and to help me reach my goal of making it to base camp. I would love to raise as money much possible to help people reach their goals of beating this illness.
If you could please spare a few less cups of coffee this week and donate ... your support would be greatly appreciated.
