Music sets our heart on fire. Music cuts through the madness. Music creates meaningful moments that make us feel free, alive, and more connected – with ourselves and with one another. This couldn’t be more true for anyone impacted by Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. My mum's early onset Alzheimer's may be deteriorating, but in the moments we sing together and share music, she lights up and her true nature glows brighter than ever. I cherish these moments dearly and even though she may not remember them, I know they mean the world to her too. As a musician and performer, I am humbled to share music with others and know the healing power it has in helping us through difficult times, to bring us together, to create connection and meaning, and remind us that we’re not alone. I want to turn the madness of Dementia and Alzheimer’s into something more hopeful and joyful for others so this Winter, I aim to walk solo from Hobart to St. Helens (approx. 260kms) to raise awareness and funds for increasing music programs and music resources for Dementia and Alzheimer’s patients across aged care facilities in Tasmania. Whether it’s access to live musicians who play for aged care residents, having personalised playlists, or engaging in music therapy programs, I want to spread the joy of music where it’s needed. So for anyone who has been impacted by Dementia or Alzheimer’s, anyone who has lost a loved one to the disease, anyone who is caring for someone with it, or anyone currently going through the craziness of it all, you’re not alone, this walk is for you!
