About
So here I go again - Attempting to run a 50km trail this time! Testing how far I can go while at the same time making the run less about myself and more about a great cause :)
Is autism increasing ? It appears to be that way – the media tells us stories about the rising number of children in schools, funding for people with autism well surpassing the NDIS budget (Gibbs, 2017). Whether you have someone close to you who has autism or not, you don't have to look far to find someone who knows someone on the autism spectrum. There is no quick blood test, scan or physical assessment that can diagnose autism and we have to rely on a pediatricians and/or psychologists to thoroughly assess the individuals with a diagnostic checklists. More behaviours that are considered to be indicative of autism and also including descriptions of subtler symptoms that previously may have been overlooked, are now part of the diagnostic checklist (Gibbs, 2017). The fantastic expanding diagnostic tools mean that many children who are diagnosed with autism today would not have been diagnosed with autism 15 years ago. An estimated 1 in 70 people has autism; that’s almost 230,000 Australians (Autism Spectrum Australia, 2019).
While we have improved the ability to identify individuals on the autism spectrum, there is still alot of work to do in understanding them as individuals, providing them with the right support, helping them with challenges and working with their strengths and interests to give them the greatest opportunity in life (Gibbs, 2017).
Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) is an Australian not-for-profit provider of services and supports working with people on the autism spectrum and their families. They are involved in diagnosis, assessments, early intervention and therapies; as well as organising social groups and employment mentoring (Autism Spectrum Australia, 2019). You can check out more of their great resources on their website: https://www.autismspectrum.org.au/content/how-we-help-0
This will be a challenging ultra trail run (No doubt!) and a distance I have never ran, but it is no match for the obstacles faced by individuals and their loved ones as they navigate life with autism. Thankyou for sparing a few bucks to keep these legs turning over for a great cause!
Cheers Mez
