— Tarin Dempers is a Masters of International Development student at RMIT undertaking her research project looking at stigma, disability and community participation. There is a global strategy currently calling not for the elimination of leprosy, but for an understanding that leprosy cannot be eliminated alone by treating the disease, the multi drug therapy, but that there is a need to combat the social and cultural long-lasting effects of stigmatization and loss of occupational performance in people with leprosy.
Together with team at The Leprosy Mission Trust India, the research project aims to determine what social change has occurred from the perspective of people with disabilities through understanding their stories. That is, whether engagement in development projects impacted community and persons perceptions of disability and associated stigma and meaningful community participation.
The Leprosy Mission is committed to the empowerment of individuals, families and communities affected by leprosy or at risk of the disease. Such people often suffer from lack of choice and are usually powerless to change their situation.
