Australian farmers all over have been experiencing drought for the last 60 years or so. They're a hardy bunch that keep on battling, but with rain being even more scarce recently, the drought has not only messed with their livelihoods but has become a real threat to their lives and the lives of their families. Between water restrictions and feed prices skyrocketing, farming families are struggling to put food on their own tables let alone feed their farms.
I work at an IGA grocers in a small outback town called Baradine and on countless occassions I've heard customers speaking about their struggles. It has come to such a stage that mothers can't afford school lunches, and staples, such as bread and milk, are a luxury. Families can't afford to keep stock so are shooting them and are having to close down farms that have been in their families for generations.
But humanity is still alive! I see one sister paying for the others groceries because she knows the family is struggling. I see staff members setting up donation trollies, and community members organising hampers and vouchers that may provide a semblance of peace to those in need. So I felt it was my turn to do something for Old Mate!
All donations will be spent purchasing IGA vouchers. Vouchers will be given to local charity groups, such as the Salvation Army or the Women's Country Auxiliary, to be dispersed to farming families in need.
Come on guys, local, interstate, international!! HUMANITY FIRST! Let's get in there and get this done!! Because "We are one, but we are many. And from all the lands on earth we come. We share a dream, and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian".
