Effective Altruism Perth plays host to "Illicit Altruism": A Speakeasy themed night of tournament style Texas Hold‘em poker in the name of charity. There will be fundraising games, prizes and if poker is not your thing, take a seat at the separate games table (open to suggestions on how to run this table).
Where: The 30 person capacity venue is in East Perth (available upon request once attendance is confirmed)
When: From 7pm until 11pm on Friday 29th June 2018.
What: Numbers dependent, we will be running several tables (up to 8 participants on each) of tournament knock-out style Texas Hold‘em. Because the event is in the name of charity, we will be allowing players to buy back in! Blinds will be raised every 15 minutes in order to ensure a timely finish (hopefully before 10pm).
Theme: Dress to impress in Speakeasy themed attire for your chance to win the best-dressed award.
Entry: We ask that you donate a minimum of $25 (give more if you’re feeling generous!) in order to gain your unique entry password and a seat at one of the tables.
Prizes: There will be prizes available for the top players on each table, such as; a weekend stay at luxury serviced apartments in Albany (...whale watching season is upon us!), muchos alcohol, food hampers, and more!!! (Contact us if you would like to donate to the prize pool).
Food: We'll be providing some form snackage on the night, but we invite everyone to "bring a plate". Bring whatever you like, although we encourage vegan/vegetarian dishes if you intend on spreading the joy (Effective Altruism events usually have more vegos than your average event...). If you want to bake something and sell it on the night to add to the proceeds, then be our guest ?
Drink: To raise as much money as possible for the chosen charities, we will be seeking cash donations in return for some of Dan Murphy’s finest offerings… (we suggest $5 per pop…)
The Charities: The chosen charities are both highly rated effective charities, consistently appearing in the top rated charity lists from organisations such as "GiveWell" and "The Life You Can Save".
Against Malaria Foundation distributes insecticide treated bed nets in various locations across Africa. It is estimated that this is one of the most cost effective ways of saving lives and reducing poverty. https://www.givewell.org/charities/amf#Costperlifesaved
Fred Hollows Foundation provides cheap ophthalmic surgery to those suffering from conditions such as trachoma. Current best estimates show that donations totalling $40,000 (estimated average cost of training a guide dog) to a charity such as Fred Hollows would lead to ~40 cases of severe visual impairment reversed versus 1 case of providing a blind person with a guide dog. A no brainer really!
Note: Effective Altruism Perth is committed to promoting sustainability. We aim to recycle and minimize waste. Please consider the environment and avoid single use plastic items where possible.
