Raising awareness of Dementia and much needed funds for Dementia Australia and Alzheimers Research UK.
Jamie Milne is an experienced and in demand strength and conditioning coach who owns and operates the Jamie Milne Training Facility on the Sunshine Coast.
In the late 1990s, Jamie’s grandmother Mary passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was an only child raised by his father and his grandparents played a pivotal role in his early upbringing. Many Miles for Mary (MMFM) was a thought, a dream, a grieving process stemming from the day of Mary’s funeral. At the time of the service, Jamie was unable to gather the words to farewell his Nanny, even though he really wanted to. Jamie decided to farewell Mary in his own special way. So I’m 2009, MMFM the ultra endurance charitable awareness campaign was born.
In 2016, the MMFM East Coast Run raised over $22,000 and dementia awareness for the Australian Dementia Research Foundation. In 2017, the MMFM West Coast Run raised over $12,000 for the same cause.
In total, MMFM has raised over $100,000 for various charities!
In 2018, the 10th Anniversary of the MMFM campaign, we are taking the run to Scotland, the homeland of Mary. Jamie and a hand picked team will run 1400km over 14 days from Lands End Cornwall to John O Groats Scotland. Jamie and the MMFM 2018 team are aiming to raise $25,000 towards much needed research by the Australian Dementia Research Foundation and Alzheimers Research UK. We are asking for your help to raise awareness, funds and to support this worthy cause
Dementia is the second leading cause of death of Australians each year. There are currently 413,016 Australia’s living with Dementia and by 2050, it is estimated that this will increase to 900,000.
People with Dementia account for 52% of all residents in residential aged care facility and it affects almost 50 million people worldwide.
More than 850,000 people live with dementia in the UK and that number is rapidly rising. At £24 billion each year, dementia costs the UK economy more than cancer and heart disease combined but over two thirds of the care for patients with dementia is paid for by themselves or their family.
1 in 3 babies born this year will go on to develop dementia in their lifetime.
£20 could fund one hour of vital research
£50 could provide access to specialist equipment for studying cells
£120 could support complex protein analysis
£300 could pay for a genetic test to help identify risk genes
With no cause or cure currently available, research grants are vital in reducing these statistics. The Australian Dementia Research Foundation and Alzheimers Redearch UK work tirelessly to continue the research that is desperately needed so all fund will enable this to continue.
We ask that you follow the MMFM 2018 journey on our social media sites (Facebook and Instagram), share, donate and spread the word.
