A few months ago,I was lucky to become involved with the Operation Food for Life Born Free Sanctuary, as the Bank South Pacific Treasury dealing team chose the refuge as its community service project for 2017. The Born Free Sanctuary was built in 2016, and now provides shelter, food and education for 38 children (mostly girls) from disadvantaged, abused and/or parentless backgrounds in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The BSP Treasury team, is providing support by building a perimeter fence for the Sanctuary, as it is currently unsecured and backs onto a settlement, causing security issues.
Due to the growth in number of children, we would like to assist further by building a learning centre on the Sanctuary property, giving the children a proper place to study, to access information online, to use computers or simply hang out, kicking back and reading a book from the library.
The Born Free Sanctuary has touched my heart, and after many years of actively donating to many worthy causes, I would like to contribute directly, in a small way to improving the quality of life and education of the Sanctuary children by helping the dedicated Learning Centre become a reality.
To make this happen, we need to raise funds for the building works to commence, later this year.
To assist in raising funds to build the Learning Centre, I’m privileged to be embarking on a wonderful adventure in late October, following in the footsteps of Tenzing, Hillary and other great mountaineers, trekking to Everest Base Camp. Geoff Robb (OAM) (the first Australian to summit the seven highest peaks in the seven continents) will lead our expedition. The group will traverse the lesser travelled Gokyo Valley, taking in the views of Chu Oyu (6th highest mountain in the world 8,201m), Gokyo Lakes and Mt Everest itself (8,848m) from the summit of Gokyu Ri (5,280m). Crossing Cho La (5,420m) to Kalar Pattar (5,680m) and then onto Everest Base Camp (5,362m).
The highest ascent I have ever completed is Mt Wilhelm (4,509m) Papua New Guinea’s highest Mountain, so am unsure how I will enjoy living for 11 days breathing half the amount of oxygen I normally breathe at sea level.
If you have time, please visit the Operation Food for Life website, for more background on the great work that Operation Food for Life does in providing physical, emotional and spiritual support bringing dignity and hope to the poor, the forgotten and the disadvantaged.
Any support and contribution is greatly appreciated and will facilitate commencement of building works for the Born Free Sanctuary Learning Centre.
Thanks,
Rohan
Very pleased to support such a worthy cause Rohan
