Help us launch our Children's book - Halls Creek Rodeo Song

We are raising funds to turn the song 'Halls Creek Rodeo Song' into a beautiful picture book with lyrics. This song was written by kids in Halls Creek and the book uses illustrations by the kids. Music teachers love it, kids
love it, audiences love it.

For years, singers in Madjitil Moorna have thought the song deserves to be right out there, celebrating contemporary Aboriginal culture, kids’ creativity and all that’s positive about living in the bush.

Here is how the project started...

In 2009, Madjitil Moorna travelled out to the great Kimberley region of WA to the town of Halls Creek. Led by choir leader George Walley, kids were asked to write their own song about Halls Creek. The Rodeo was the obvious subject! It’s the best thing on the calendar – an exciting weekend of amazing rodeo skills, reunions of old friends, cowboy fashion and very little sleep!

Lyric: ‘People come from miles around….just to get to Halls Creek town….
They’ll be right in the Halls Creek dust tonight!’

This song has become an absolute favourite for kids, choirs and audiences since George put the words to music. It was recorded with kids at the PRK Halls Creek Radio studio. School choirs across Perth are now singing the song with gusto as they imagine the excitement for other kids in remote places, at rodeo time.

While the lyrics capture the spirit of the rodeo, kids also drew pictures……for a deadly picture book one day.

Madjitil Moorna has dreamt of publishing this book since 2010 when we realised how much pride Halls Creek kids had in their rodeo song and the story it tells. Relevant reading material is not always easy to find in remote and regional Australia and this book is not only relevant but it celebrates ‘the best thing’ about living in their town.
