The idea of a “karma keg” is a relatively new phenomenon sweeping across Australian pubs and bars. We have a pretty solid drinking culture here in Oz, so why not help others whilst enjoying a schooey? The basic idea is that the venue allows the customers to “pay what they want” for a beer until the keg runs dry. Technically, some A-grade asshole could come into the bar and drink approximately 150 beers for free, but that would defeat the purpose. The karma keg is based on the ‘what goes around comes around’ principle as proceeds from the keg go to the Smart Pups Assistance Dogs charity.
With corporate social responsibility becoming more and more important in today’s business climate, the big beer barons are getting involved too. Just recently, the Stone and Wood Brewery have donated kegs of their glorious Pacific Ale to local pubs and venues helping to turn cold beer into cold hard cash donations.
