Tim and Ronan Buckley compete in The North Pole Marathon

The Coolest Race on Earth!

Tim and Ronan Buckley have successfully completed the North Pole Marathon and as predicted, it was a grueling event! Temperatures ranged from minus 32C at the beginning of the race and dropped below minus 40C towards the end. The wind chill factor made conditions even more difficult, taking temperatures down to almost minus 60C The course snaked through undulating ice fields and pack ice that was layered with knee-high soft snow and ice, which saps your energy and makes running damn near impossible.

The race began at 10.30pm on Saturday the 8th April and continued throughout the Artic night with a sun that never dipped below the horizon, the armed guards, an ever present reminder of the risk from polar bears.

Tim and Ronan are the first father and son competitors in this event, Ronan finishing in a time of 6:40.07 14th place and Tim with 8:12:54 26th place respectively. It was a great result, given the race conditions and considering that this was Ronan’s first (and probably last marathon!).

Tim and Ronan are working towards raising $15,000 for The Fred Hollows Foundation, which will help to continue transforming lives, restoring sight, independence and dignity to those who need it most.

Monies raised are tax deductible and all raised funds will go to the Foundation.
