About
To mark the milestone of the first anniversary of the sad, untimely passing of Dr Evan Soicher, his family have decided to embark on a fundraising project. They have elected to raise funds for the KWALE EYE CENTRE in Kenya, in loving memory of a devoted Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Brother-in-law and Loyal friend. Dr Soicher was a compassionate & dedicated eye specialist, who loved his work and was highly respected by both his colleagues and patients far and wide and they looked forward to their annual appointments and their time with him. He looked forward to offering his expertise to the Kwale Eye Centre one day in his career.
Dr. Soicher was dedicated to eye care in rural areas both in Johannesburg, South Africa during his medical training, and in Australia where he worked with the Outback Eye Service for Indigenous Australians in Bourke, New South Wales. The Outback Eye Service brought much needed treatment to these areas that otherwise would have gone without. He was also a founding partner of a private practice, Southern Ophthalmology in Sydney, and is sorely missed by his partners, colleagues, staff and his many devoted patients.
Kwale Eye Centre, based in Kenya, started as a small one-roomed clinic over 20 years ago and is now a large eye centre serving tens of thousands each year. Ongoing funding is needed to keep the clinic running effectively and to treat the eye problems they encounter. Updated ophthalmic equipment and staff are essential for the day to day efficiency of a modern eye care facility.
Cataracts are still the commonest cause of blindness and a 15 minute operation can restore sight. Dr Helen Roberts a British Trained Ophthalmologist runs the clinic, and together with her dedicated team, have facilitated in this rewarding fundraising venture with Evan’s family.
To honour Evan's memory FIVE YEARS after his passing, we are
funding a screening trip to remote villages in Kwale to assist patients living with avoidable blindness. They will be brought to the clinic for life-changing cataract surgery by the Dr Helen Roberts, funded by our generous donors.
