Alfred Deakin: Prayers of a Prime Minister

Alfred Deakin was a great man who served our country Australia faithfully and unselfishly. Three times an Australian Prime Minister he also was the Father of Federation, Attorney General, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Founder of the High Court, Australian Navy, Arbitration Commission and Commonwealth Meteorology Bureau plus his government passed a swag of other important legislation.

For 10 years he worked tirelessly to move a divided group of colonies towards a great unified Commonwealth nation, all the time paying his own way and taking care of his young family. As the President of the Animal Protection authority he even established the Act that now protects the rights of animals. He was Australia's greatest orator and statesman who wrote poetry and established the Commonwealth Literary Fund to support Australian authors.

In 1907 as Prime Minister he traveled to London to fight for Australian trade rights but he worked so hard he damaged his health and eventually retired early dying in 1919. So few know his story and only remember that Deakin University is named after him.
