A bit about why I’m taking on this mammoth task.

In 2017 I became pretty sick, showing all the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes. After a week in hospital my world has changed. From having to do regular finger pricks to having to read the labels of everything in the supermarket to work out how much insulin was needed. It was a steep learning curve to gain a new normal and it wasn’t easy.

I started to develop depression due to the overwhelming, constant attention diabetes required as I was struggling to know what to do.

I ended up in a pretty dark place. All because I couldn’t deal with it.
Diabetes Sucks.

Financially, emotionally and physically it’s crap.

5years on and I’m now on an Insulin Pump that acts as my pancreas, and my control of the disease is now pretty good.

THE FOUNDATION
About the Type1 Foundation

OUR CORE PURPOSE IS TO SUPPORT, CONNECT AND ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN, ADULTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

We are a not-for-profit charity. Our aim is to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes through education in schools, medical practices and the wider community. We provide support and connect families living with this chronic disease through our large scale events and various programs.
“The Type 1 Foundation has a current focus of support for families when a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes occurs. The Foundation is not research based or even looking for a cure, it is acknowledging and supporting the ‘human element’ of a diagnosis of this life long disease. A cure is the ultimate, but living with it daily is the reality.

The support is around the concept of ‘right here, right now’, in the moment of diagnosis and what is needed for that family to survive and most of all thrive.

Support and connection of Type 1 families is something that drives the Type1 Foundation. A diagnosis of a life long disease comes with so many strong emotions – isolation, fear and constant worry, just to name a few.

The Type 1 Foundation aim to support the family through this difficult time and change the ‘‘feeling of focus’ to community awareness and support.

The passion behind the mission is driven by the motivation to support the emotional journey of Type 1 families. It is most definitely a whole family challenge and we are very much aware of other fabulous charities for Type1 Diabetes, but there is not one out there with a sole focus on connection, care and support.

Building a strong and tight Type 1 network can most definitely create not only awareness within the wider community, but also much needed connection and crucial support for families to set them up for life’s challenges.

“Emotional support of families with Type1 is the glue that will stick them together forever. This disease has no current cure, but we can most definitely put our focus on what is achievable and our passion to support our Type 1 families through their journey is our number one goal!”

I wish I could donate more. Don’t know you bro but we’re all one big type 1 family in this together and I wish you all the best on your Kokoda Treck. It’s inspiring to see and reading your story gives me hope that my little man is gonna be okay. He was diagnosed T1D in 2020, age 8 and like you said, it’s a huge adjustment. He struggles with depression around his diabetes, it breaks my heart but I’d love to connect him with people like yourself who can be role models for him to look up to. You’re all warriors in my eyes. Nobody has any idea of how hard it truly is living with T1 until they’re living it. Good on you for kicking diabetes up the ass and for continuing to climb to the top, regardless of the setbacks and limitations. I haven’t actually heard of this organisation before, but I’d love to look into it because my little man and I could use some extra support with managing Diabetes. sounds like a great organisation
