Transplant Australia is hosting the 2023 World Transplant Games and I, a bone
marrow transplant recipient, have been selected by Transplant Australia as a member of the
Australian Team to compete at these Games.
Back in October 2013, I was diagnosed with both AML & ALL (Leukaemia - blood cancer) and undertook a Bone Marrow Transplant in April 2014. At the time my wife was pregnant with our 2nd daughter, with a 15-month old toddler in tow everywhere.
Over the 2-year period from diagnosis, I had multiple rounds of chemo, 38 bags of blood and a couple of visits & time spent in ICU.
The World Transplant Games are a celebration of life received through organ and tissue
donation. They unite all those touched by donation including transplant recipients, donor
families, living donors and those waiting.
Through sport and games, competitors benchmark their renewed health and wellness and say thank you to organ and tissue donors. The Games provide an opportunity to network with others in similar situations - transplant recipients and others from the transplant community.
The World Transplant Games raises awareness for organ and tissue donation and demonstrates ‘what a life difference’ transplantation makes.
Congratulations Liam and best of luck!
