Nuns in Sri Lanka

A political and economic crisis grips Sri Lanka. There are severe shortages of essential goods like food and medicine, business face closures and Sri Lankan poor struggle to eat as value of the rupees plummets.

Buddhist nuns rely on "alms", the generosity of their community to survive. Currently their community has no money to offer them food, the nuns are helpless to find basic needs like food and medicine.

Neluwapitiya Bhodhimalakaramaya Nun's monastery is located in the village of Danthure in the Kandy district in Sri Lanka. This nunnery houses 20 nuns, ranging from young to elderly nuns. The local community who generally supports them are tea pluckers who survive on daily wage labor.

These nuns provide spiritual, psychological and educational support to their local community. They run a Dhamma school for children, teach English for free to the local village, offer counselling programs for nuns, children and elders, and spiritual support during important rituals like funerals and marriages.

It costs 20,000 LKR ($85.30 AUD) to run this monastery each week. I am wanting to fundraise to support these nuns for 12 months as it the situation in Sri Lanka will not resolve quickly. Please help support these nuns in their basic needs like food and medicine.

I first met one of these nuns, Venerable Subhagya (pictured in the photo with me above) at a "Women in Buddhism" conference in Hong Kong in 2017. We met again at a conference in Blue Mountains in 2019. I was impressed with her compassionate heart, bright mind and caring approach to the world. She contacted me to tell me of their monastery's grave situation. I was moved by the monastery's desperate situation and wanted to help. This is why I started this crowd funding campaign. Please help these nuns survive Sri Lanka's political chaos and turmoil for the next 12 months by donating now.
