Two Tamborine locals and a 10yo boy a have to re-build their lives from scratch, after losing their belongings and several animals in a fire last week.
Allyse Le Fevre , her 10yo son Kayde and her friend Toby were renting the upstairs dwelling of a property at Chianina Court, Tamborine, when a fire sparked at the property just before 12pm on Thursday 17 February
Ms Le Fevre says the fire started while she was outside tending to her cats and Toby was down the back feeding the horses and their landlord was downstairs in the house. Luckily Kayde was with his father as they have a share care agreement between them.
“The fire started while Toby and I were outside and we ran to the house, when our landlord Mick who lived down stairs, started yelling "the house is on FIRE!" When we
got to the front of the house flames were already raging from inside and out the windows, all we could hear was things breaking and falling over.
“The three of us tried to get the hose, but it was never going to work as the power had tripped and the pump could not work. We were all screaming at each other and couldn’t believe how fast the fire was growing.
“Luckily in this time a friend arrived and called 000.”
On arrival, emergency services found the dwelling fully engulfed by flames. Limited water supply in the area hampered firefighting efforts, as the property burned to the ground.
The tenants watched on as everything they owned, went up in flames.
Ally and Toby had no contents insurance, while the owner of the property Mick, was insured.
As an animal carer, Ally looked after cats and kittens at the property, before re-homing them and was due to hand all relevant paperwork into the council that very next day being Friday so she could officially start her business. With Toby’s help, she had been working towards this since October last year, now it’s all gone and the fire has
left them both feeling like all that hard work has been all for nothing as she cannot continue it now.
Sadly, animals were lost in the fire, those being their family pets. Ally's Ring Neck parrot, her name was Chick, Ally had her for 7 years and hand raised her from 2 days old. Kayde's fighter fish named Dash and also one cat was found alive but severely burnt and couldn’t be saved. Three cats are still missing.
They both say that they tried to rescue as many animals as they could.
“As I re-homed cats and kittens, and rescued some along with recently becoming a registered breeder, I was in the process of finalising paperwork and enclosures, so I had a few to try and save including my dog Obie who I found in the shed hiding"
Toby was silly and ran into the house full of black smoke looking for our cats, while I climbed onto the roof and grabbed what cats and baby kittens I could. Toby came out to help me and we had to balance along the edge of the back veranda about 30cm wide holding each end of a good-sized cage the cats were in, once on the shed roof Toby went back onto the veranda to try find the other cats and I was screaming for someone to help me get the cage down the ladder but no one came. Toby came back to me on the roof, he climbed down and helped me get the cats down the ladder and I then followed. I had no time to go back to save my other pets . In the process I lost a mother cat who had 4 babies and I’m now I'm having to hand rear the orphaned kittens myself.
Once we both had got down from the roof, we both then went out the front where Mick our landlord, was already standing. Then Toby ran back in and Mick and I were both yelling at him to come back outside, Toby came back out and all three of us could do nothing but wait and watch our home burn.
“Í surrendered some kittens to the RSPCA early that night when they arrived as I have nowhere to house them. We have been back every day since the fire and we found our Manx kitten up in between the shade cloth shade sail between the shed
and granny flat. As he heard my voice, he just started crying, I cut a hole in the shade cloth and pulled him down and he just cuddled me like a human would. He didn’t want to be left alone at all and smelt like fire and his fur was slightly singed.
That same night we found a black rescue kitten that I thought would have had no hope and I was really upset with myself for not saving him. But he did make it, although he’s paws are burnt and he was in shock, I took him to Yarrabilba Vet, where they kindly checked him out and gave me medication for him free of charge, I sincerely thank them very much for their generosity, he is slowly recovering.
Two days later, sadly I found the remains of one of my own cats within the ash and rubble from the house. I was devastated. I found Mick’s cat as well and I have let him know. I've been having to also care for her since. Until we finally were able to drop her to him. Toby dropped his cat to him on the 28th, 11 days after the fire, to the Bearded Dragon Motel where he has been homed.
Ally says they now have nowhere to go.
“We are reaching out for help, as I don’t know what else to do or where to turn. We have been so busy since that day trying to get what’s left from the shed and pull-down enclosures and move the horses etc. The mental impact is so hard, we are just devastated, at the moment I think we are just surviving on adrenaline, our minds are racing constantly. It's hard to then find the time to get on Facebook to reply to everyone and to tell our story and updates as it is so very hard mentally to be at the property. We are sorry if we haven’t replied to generous offers of help. I've called a lot of services regarding accommodation and help and nothing is available or I’m still waiting for a call back.
I’m lucky my son can be at his dads and has a home, but not being able to care and nurture him, spend loving family time with him as much or being there to help him through this is so hard and I know it’s even harder for him although he puts on a brave face.
I feel we will find it hard applying for a rental as we have nothing, not even a bond and I won’t get rid of our personal pets for anything, as they are part of our family and all we have left. They are going through this as well.
We have had no accommodation offered to us and we have called all recommended numbers and also to the extent of asking hotels ourselves for help, even for one night, just to be able to have time with Kayde.
Currently they are staying at a neighbours' friend's house who they only just met recently. Their friend is sleeping on his couch just to help them out and Kayde has to stay at his fathers until they find a place to live.
They had been contacted by a local reporter and did an interview over the phone and were asked to email through their story and as they hadn’t heard anything for a
few days Ally contacted the lady to receive a reply that made them loose hope of being able to get any help to re build their lives.
“Thanks,
I'm busy with a few other stories now with the floods.
I'll chase up my editor and see if she is interested. I hope you are doing ok.
Best wishes,
****”
“Wow so what we lost and are still going through is now forgotten because of the flood, I don't know what’s worse, that or the house burning down, and NO, we are NOT doing ok"
They are waiting on a phone call to find out about a house they accidently stumbled across when they had been re locating the horses and hope they are able to move in soon but have no belongings and enclosures for the animals and will need help with bond and rent initially.
“We had found a perfect paddock to re locate my horses, a nearby property came up but we accidentally happened to be talking to the wrong person, not the land owner of the agistment, we told our story and may have landed the perfect place, I started to cry when I thought it was even possible. I couldn’t believe that something could actually be going our way. We just need to wait now to hear the yes or no.
We really worry how we are going to replace all our things, along with my son's loss. For Christmas, Toby helped me surprise Kayde with a bedroom make over and a brand-new gaming set up that I had saved close to a year for. Not to mention his VR headset, PS4 and all his toys and new clothing. We originally thought we would get help with replacing some that we lost in the fire with the house insurance of the Landlord, but sadly communications have been anything but pleasant since, we decided to shut that book and try to re build ourselves to save the possibility of an ongoing fight, when we feel it's a time to support each other and stick together.
A #mycause Fundraiser and a GoFundMe page has been set up, to help the housemates get back on their feet.
