When it comes to safety, hospitality as an industry is in desperate need of support. While bound by the RSA, certification and training can be at the discretion of the venue, manager or individual.
There is a dangerous infrastructure gap in the industry that is perpetuating ideas that we don’t require sweeping safety laws. There are barriers to accessing help in creating policies for the safety of patrons and staff. There is a societal mainstream assumption that service workers have less rights than other workers while at work.
All of this we see everyday, regardless of what side of the bar we’re on.
Now look at the statistics.
89% of hospitality workers had experienced sexual harassment at work, United Voice Survey.
20.9% of hospitality workers disclosed being harassed by a manager, Australian Unions Survey.
48% of those surveyed by United Voice said their employers did not take harassment in the workplace seriously, United Voice Survey.
This information is what leads us to believe that The Consent Blueprints are needed to fill this harmful gap. Developed by Ishma Alvi (psychologist) and Nicola Keating (journalist) The Consent Blueprints aim to provide consent education and training programs, tailor-made, suitable to all spaces and industries. The programs are based on behavioural science, social psychology, gender dynamics, and the interactions therein.
The Consent Blueprints recently won a grant to address this gap, by creating and delivering a set of manuals (Blueprints), resources and training workshops, for the hospitality industry, aimed at harm prevention and risk minimisation from sexual harassment. We’re nearly there, but developing tools to address sexual harassment in the hospitality space takes more than we imagined.
We’re committed to help make hospitality safe for everyone - but we need your help.
We've got Blueprint I in our toolkit, but there are multiple aspects to effectively putting this information out there. In order to make sure that everyone understands consent, their rights and where it sits between self and safety, this is what we want your help to do:
Donation Aims:
For $2500 we can manualise Blueprint I which is the guide to identifying and minimising harm from, and managing risk of, sexual harassment in hospitality.
For $5000 we can manualise Blueprints I & II, the latter an event specific guide to addressing sexual harassment in hospitality.
For $8000 we can create audio-visual material to extend the reach of Blueprint I.
For $16000 we can create audio-visual material to extend the reach of Blueprints I & II.
For $20,000 we can manualise the Blueprints, create the audio-visual materials for both, and launch our company so that we can reach the hospitality industry effectively and begin making it safe for everyone in it.
with the new changes to respect@work and lack of honesty and transparency in our federal halls, The Consent Blueprints development has never been more crucial. I hope to donate more down the track. You're on the right track. It IS worth it.
